Can CBD Help my Menopause?

Each year tens of thousands of women develop Perimenopausal symptoms often starting in their early to mid-40s and lasting several years. Menopause occurs when a woman no longer has a period for at least 12 consecutive months. During the years leading up to menopause, symptoms are often severe enough to affect daily life at home and work. Essentially these symptoms are the result of a decline in both Estrogen and Progesterone and its consequential effects. These symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • Hot flashes
  • Mood changes
  • Lack of energy
  • Bloating/Breast tenderness
  • Decreased libido
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Decreased concentration
  • Insomnia
  • Weight gain

Cannabidiol (CBD) for the treatment of Peri and Postmenopausal symptoms.

A primary role of CBD is to provide a chemical balance between our organ systems and our brain. By providing a chemical balance there is an overall feeling of wellness, which results in the appropriate functioning levels of one’s sleep, mood, energy, appetite and perception of pain/discomfort. However, during the time leading up to menopause as Estrogen drops so does a woman’s
physiological and emotional balance. Estrogen plays an important role in brain function through its enhancing effects on Serotonin which oftentimes affects ones mood and cognition. Nevertheless, CBD plays a vital role in the regulation of certain neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain) such as Serotonin and Dopamine thus improving mood, cognition and energy. In addition, CBD has positive effects on the physical symptoms as well such as hot flashes, bloating, and breast tenderness.

Here are some recommended regimens for various symptoms related to Menopause

For Mood: recommend starting at 6 to 8 drops of 500mg CBD tincture each day. Take every 6 hours (3 times a day) (e.g 6AM, 12 PM, 6PM). This can be titrated up as needed. Keep under tongue for 60 seconds and then swallow.

For bloating and breast tenderness: 1/2 dropperful every 6 hours (3 times a day) hold under
tongue for 60 seconds.

For hot flashes: start with 25 mg capsule once or twice a day depending on your need. Each capsule should have an 8 to 10-hour effect. Take the capsule in relation to the time of day or night your symptoms are most prominent. For example, if your symptoms began around 1 pm and progress throughout the day, take the capsule at 12 pm. If your symptoms are more prevalent at night start taking the capsule at night. For more intense symptoms increase to 50 mg capsule and supplement with 1000mg CBD tincture to take on an as-needed basis. Suggest taking 1⁄2 dropperful sublingually and hold under tongue for 60 seconds.

If symptoms are more prevalent at night (e.g night sweats) take the capsule at bedtime. For a faster onset and greater effect place the capsule 25 or 50 mg in the lower corner of the mouth between gum and cheek and allow to dissolve completely and simply dispose of the empty gelatin capsule.

For Vaginal dryness: With the CBD infused in coconut oil the tincture serves as a very good lubricant. In addition, coconut oil has both antimicrobial and antifungal properties. The tincture can be gently and safely applied to the vaginal labia as well as internally for clitoral stimulation. Just apply the desired amount of drops on the fingers for application.

*The recommendations above are not based on any published studies or independent data.
They are simply my general recommendations based on anecdotal feedback. Many of the
feedback regarding menopausal symptoms were often incidental. That is the patient may have
presented with a chief complaint of headaches or fatigue and on follow up had improvement in
her perimenopausal symptoms.

    • CBD is not addictive and you can obtain it without a physical exam, however, it would very beneficial to meet for a consultation if this is your first introduction to CBD. Please give us a call at 410-821-1853 option 3 to learn more about CBD and/or to set up a CBD Consultation with me.
